Here is the Once upon a time in Hollywood Review.
This was a long-awaited movie and Once upon a time in Hollywood trailer had created a high expectation quotient.
Once upon a time in Hollywood casts such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Al Pacino, followed by the guest appearance of Kurt Russel and all this under the direction of Quentin Tarantino made a solid case for First Day first show.
I think the trailer and the publicity surrounding the movie plot had created a different perception and expectation so as to give you a precursor to my complete dissatisfaction.
If you have seen its publicity material, it sort of gave an impression that it was supposed to be about a serial killer in Hollywood and how law catches up with him finally.
But we learn only after spending 30 minutes in the Movie hall that , it’s a story of 70s Hollywood actor Rick Dalton ( Leo ) and his stuntman double – Cliff Booth( Brad Pitt ) and their struggle to survive and succeed and face daily battle of ups and downs and the rivalry and the competition in those days.
This is the THEME OF THE MOVIE IN ONE LINE.
Now that would explain, why it is difficult for a director like Quentin Tarantino to build a plot/story in his style and make you sit through.
It is much like Yash Chopra directing the movie * Jai Santoshi Maa* – It won’t work for Yash Chopra and neither for Santoshi Maa.
The genre is completely different for a director like Quentin Tarantino.
The scotch whiskey can not be made using sugarcane alcohol – Simple and straightforward.
So we are forced to go through Quentin’s dilemma in about 20 minutes from the word go-
The film gyrates at different levels, altitudes and also interpretations of the 70s and 80s Hollywood – It takes a detour in between to Hippy Movement which enables Quentin to show his core traits of showing the absurdities of such life and the violence but only for a brief 20 minutes. This de-tour on the storyline completely baffled me amidst the complete confusion which I was already in halfway through.
Leo and Brad build the characters with super conviction and ease which is the only comfort in the 2 hr 20-minute ordeal. Margot Robbie is completely wasted and Al Pachino disappears by the time we are getting to know whose character he is playing. Kurt Russel is anyway has a guest appearance so no relief on that part as well.
It was just a disaster – At least for me. But the socialites and Neo-film makers will love this movie.
So I could be the odd man out. So be it. Watch it with the hazards described above.
